I agree in the free and informed judgement made by a competent adult patient concering the use of withdrawal of life sustaining procedures should always be respected and complied with. If a competent patient has requested the withdrawal of life sustaining procedures then is should be honored, regardless of Catholic moral teaching of the Catholic healthcare institution beliefs.
If the patient has been informed of all the factors involved and desires not to have these essential needs administered unto him, then he should not be subjected unto him, then he should not be subjected to these things against his will. Unfortunately there is presumption that one wants to be "kept alive" or "made comfortable", and to keep that individual in this way against his will at all costs because of the Catholic health care institution's beliefs.
Where do we draw th line then? There are other things to consider besides the life or imminent death of the patient. What about ensuing costs that will be left for the decendent's family to cover? The pain and suffering of the family to see their loved one going through pain and suffering?
If the adult patient has shown to be competent in his decision making, why can't he be competent enough to decide he does not want to suffer any longer and to take him off life support or any outside assistance and allow him to pass away?
In conclusion, I am firm in my opionion and belief. I belief. I believe that we as people should respect an individual's rights to make a sound decision for himself to be removed from life sustaining procedures. The person has made a decision about his own body and life, that doesen't truly involve any physical harm to any other individual. Now of course one would say the individuak is hurting their loved ones mentally, but once again there is no other party being physically harmed, except the individual making the decision in a free and informed sound body and ming competent individual.

I agree in Euthanasia an action or omission that of istself or by intention causes death in order to alleviate suffering. Catholic health care institutions may never condone or participate in euthanasia or assisted suicide in any way. Euthanasia, or literally "good death," for all intents and purposes was meant to be a positive alternative to living one's final days in pain and suffering.
During the 80's when Jack Kavorkian introduced his ideas into society, he considered it a great alternative to living a less than dignified life for the terminally ill individual who was in the final stages of life.
The Catholic point of view is that this and should be a part of one's experience of existence on earth before going on to experience the spiritual eternal life.
I find it hypo critical to have the option to put an animal out of its misery but then allow a human being to continue to suffer through in illness and the pain caused thereby. If Lassie can be put to rest, why can't Larry or Lucy? Isn't a human being considered to be able to communicate its likes and dislikes, comforts and discomforts? At this point it seems as though the animal has more favor in death?
Perhaps th powers that be have forgotten about the tenth ammendment that allows individuals the power to make decisions in matters such as these. Who are we as nation to judge an individual's pain tolerance and then in return, tell them how long they should suffer until a committee decides when one has had enough.
In conclusion to my opionion are we now acting as "God" "Jehovah" etc. who are we to judge ones life? Who are we to the Catholics to put such a high price on ones dignity until the time of natural death? What does one's dignity have to do with anything once we are gone and passed away? What are we, a 1-10 scale, that is being judged by someone else? What is your pain tolerance Ameerica? Only an individual can judge how much he can take and from that point "only God can judge us".
