Healthcare - Right or Privilege (PP13)
Is health care a right of all Americans? Why or why not? Should coverage be universal? How should coverage be paid? What universal principles should be applied in determining costs and coverages? Defend your position.

Health care should be considered a basic right of all Americans because without a healthy society, disease and death will engulf the population and a healthy population is needed for the success of any country. Universal health care should exist through a taxation system and the government should pick up the tab for those without income. The taxation system should be determined by income, with the more wealthy paying higher taxes. Everyone should be covered regardless of age, income, or pre-existing ailments and coverage should continue even if job loss occurs. The option of purchasing private insurance should also be available for those who choose not to be covered through the government. Like in Japan, government should have a standard price list for treatments, but unlike Japan, the cost of treatment should be greatly increased. Doctors should also receive benefits for health prevention in patients as well. Health care workers should be paid through the government and also be given the option of taking a lower salary in return for free education at the student’s school of choice.
I believe health care is a right for all Americans; for all humans. As medical resources have advanced so should have the laws regarding health care. In the past health care was not considered a right because there was little to no health care available. A doctor (what people considered a medical doctor) came to your home in an emergency and did what little he could and was paid, sometimes in trade for goods or services. With the medical system we have available today there should be no reason for all people not to receive health care. Many have complained about the cost of health care for the poor and uninsured that fall upon the tax payers. Most of those costs come from disease and illness that have been untreated for an extended amount of time by those without insurance until it is so bad that the medical needs of the patient are much more expensive than if the patient had received medical attention early on. This cost than falls upon the hospital in turn falling upon patients with insurance as costs for services are increased to compensate and then insurance premiums increase and health care taxes increase as well. So, in reality most insured people are already paying for the poor and uninsured.
Universal health care seems to be the only option to providing health care for everyone. With this system comes higher taxes for the working class however, those same people will have access to medical care they may not have had in the past. In the beginning of the transition to universal health care it is going to be more expensive to get the ball rolling but will decrease as more people have access to preventive medical care. Stress and over-use of emergency departments should decrease ultimately lowering the cost of procedures that could have been taking care of by a doctor or urgent care rather than the more costly ER’s. No health care system that is decided upon is going to please everyone. We are all going to have to suck it up and deal until things settle into place. I do hope there will be the option of additional coverage for people willing to pay for the supplemental insurance. My reasoning is based on the philosophy of the most good (benefit) for the most people. Yes the people that have a higher gross income will be the ones that are ultimately paying for the lower income families to receive health care but for the most part that is already the case.
I think health care is a right for every body. We all have the right to be healthy and why would we want a whole bunch of people running around sick and possibly getting something worse than just a common cold or flu but something that could kill us all. I don't think that all the working middle class people should have to go broke either for everyone else to have health care the goverment should pay for the people who don't have jobs, disabled and mentally sick basically anyone who cant afford to get it themselves. On basic care needs maybe they could come up with some type of prices that cover simple things like check ups, cold and flu visits simple things like that should have a flat rate regardless of the insurance and who's paying for insurance. The things that shouldn't be covered is unecessary plastic surgury and things like that, if you do need it because of a third degree burn or bad accident then it should be covered. Oh and eye and dental is important too so they need to work that in there some where because even with public health care plans over 21yrs. your teeth are not covered they'll just pay to pull them out and the tooth has to be decaying and causing problems befor they do that. I've had a bad tooth ache and that hurts worse than having a baby go figure.
I don't know what their gonna do about this horrible health care thing but they need to figure out a way to make everyone happy and have the means to be healthy.
I believe healthcare is a right of all Americans. Everyone should have healthcare coverage, people get sick and injured all the time, sometimes its due to no fault of their own (environmental factors, human contact, genetics, etc) and others get sick due to faults of their own (behaviors, etc). No mater the reason the sick and injured should get treated. If the sick are not treated they will make others sick.
Yes I feel coverage should be universal everyone gets sickness, gets diseases and gets injured. Coverage should be paid through the tax system. If you are employed it should be deducted from their salary. If you are laid off or if you are unemployed (the homeless, disabled, etc) the government should cover it. I think, if you put into the system you should able the get help from the government. If you have never put in then there should be some type of effort put in (take educational classes on the healthcare system and how it’s abused, how expensive it is, etc)
When it comes to cost and coverage it should be a set price for everyone. What ever type other coverage (PP0, PPO 300 etc) is decided upon it should be a negotiated price. If you make more money then the next person you should not be charge more for that same coverage, especially if the treatment and procedures are the same. Its make no senses why there would be different cost for the same coverage.
Health care in my opinion is a right for all Americans. I believe the country as a whole should be able to provide the minority with health care.Individuals that earn more than the medium income should pay a higher tax on earnings to subsidize health care for the low-income. The coverages should have common sense limitations on procedures and policies. The low-income citizens would pay a low co-pay ($10) compared to middle-class citizens that would pay ($25). Also coverages would be regulated by the government to keep costs relatively similar to multiple plans
ressI do believe that all Americans have the right to healthcare coverage. I would like to see a system that is similar to the Swiss model with supplemental coverage as an option. I believe everyone should be covered regardless of age, sex, or preexisting health conditions. It should be one of the government’s means of protecting its citizens’ health and financial well being. With our current healthcare system I’m looking at a future of having limited use of Medicare because that system is failing and practically going bankrupt itself. I believe our taxes (with a slight increase) should go to funding a public healthcare program. Private insurance companies should still exist for those interested in supplemental care or for those who want to opt out of the government plan for their own insurance. I know the question will come up that if I don’t participate in a public program do I still have to pay taxes for the public program? Yes, there are many tax situations already in existence that citizens pay into and don’t use the many programs funded. Property taxes are used for public schools, many paid for by people who do not have children in school or for other public programs that they may not completely agree with. With that said, as for preexisting conditions, those should still be covered, patients with ongoing acute conditions would be at greater risk to forgo treatments during gaps in coverage putting their health at a greater risk and cost. There should be incentives similar to those in the U.K. that reward providers and patients for preventative care. Patients who set goals with their providers for weight loss, diabetes control, hypertension and even substance abuse counseling should be rewarded for preventing further disease and long term costs associated with greater acute diseases. There is no perfect answer or perfect system but anything would be a welcome change to our disabled system now in place.
I believe health care is a right for all people. Health care is a necessity to all humans because we all get sick some point of our lives. I believe health care should become universal and I agree wit Jennifer that Universal healthcare should be paid by taxation and the government should take care for those who can't pay. It is a fact that the United States rate poorly comparative to others industrialized nations in health care regardless of having the best medical communications of any industrialized nation. What that’s that says about our current health care system, it is terrible and be need to change the system. Universal healthcare would help eliminate the possibility of patient going broke by unable to pay healthcare treatments because the government would take care and pay for those who for some reason don’t have a job. I believe that doctors should have some kind of reward or apart from their payment to stimulate them to keep their patient healthy, to have fewer sick patients and spending unnecessary money. I think that the government or the public by taxation should pay only necessary treatments, not treatments that are patient favouritism. As doctors as well as patient take measurements to maintain themselves healthy I believe it will help the nation and balance down the amount due to preventable diseases.
